Biography: Ruta Valaitis, BScN, MHSc, PhD

Dr. Ruta Valaitis is a Dorothy C. Hall Chair in Primary Health Care Nursing and Associate Professor in the School of Nursing at McMaster University in Hamilton. At McMaster University, she is also an Associate Member in the Department of Family Medicine. Since 2009, she has been the Deputy Director of the PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre on Primary Care Nursing and Health Human Resources. She is an investigator with Diabetes Action Canada. With Dr. Jenny Ploeg and Dr. Maureen Markle-Reid, she is Co-Director of the Aging, Community and Health Research Unit at McMaster University. Funded by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, the research unit is focused on the development and evaluation of innovative community-based interventions to optimize aging at home among older adults with multiple chronic conditions and to support their family caregivers.

 

Dr. Valaitis is globally recognized for her research in the delivery of health services and in primary care policy. Dr. Valaitis is focused on promoting health and wellness while addressing the social determinants of health to improve the delivery of community-based health and social services and system navigation for public health, primary care and home health care services. Dr. Valaitis aims to strengthen the health care system through her research by addressing the problem of siloed health sectors and by developing and testing innovative partnerships, collaborations, and linkages between community health and social services thereby removing system barriers and improving health.
