Knowledge Mobilization Basics Video Series

Want to learn the basics of knowledge mobilization? Our “Knowledge Mobilization Basics Video Series” includes five short videos explaining the WHAT/WHY, WHO, HOW, WHERE and WHEN of KM in a simple and easy to understand way.

Video 1: WHAT and WHY of Knowledge Mobilization (9:08mins). In this first video of the series, we introduce WHAT knowledge mobilization is and WHY it matters. You will learn about moving research results into the “real world” to benefit patients and the public.

Video 2: WHO is Involved in Knowledge Mobilization (10:34mins). In this second video, we share with you WHO is involved in knowledge mobilization and why it is important to include all individuals who will use or be affected by the research results in the real world. We explore how involving these individuals can ensure the best chances of successful knowledge mobilization.

Video 3: HOW to do Knowledge Mobilization (11:06mins). In this third video of our Knowledge Mobilization Basics Video Series, we take a closer look at HOW to do or practice knowledge mobilization. We explore the process of change, which is the essence of knowledge mobilization and implementation science. We share how both the science and practice of knowledge mobilization work together to make change happen.

Video 4: The WHERE of Knowledge Mobilization (8:10mins). Knowledge mobilization is not a “one size fits all” approach. In this fourth video of the series, we explore the importance of understanding contexts, settings, and circumstances – the WHERE – before we move the research results into the real world.

Video 5: WHEN to do Knowledge Mobilization (7:35mins). When should we plan for knowledge mobilization? Is there a certain or best time to be thinking about how to share the results of our research studies with those who are interested in those results? Learn about the WHEN of knowledge mobilization in this fifth and final video of our series.

Simplifying Complexity: How to select and use KM-IS Theories, Models and Frameworks in research (48:19 minutes). Did you know that KM-IS theories, models and frameworks can be used to help guide how we share, use or apply research results in the real world to benefit patients, the public, and the healthcare system? Did you know that without using these theories, models and frameworks, your KM-IS efforts could lead to failed implementation and impact as well as wasted resources? There are over 150 existing theories, models and frameworks to guide KM-IS practice, but how do we select the one that fits our purpose, and how do we actually use them?

Knowledge Translation. What is it, why is it important and how do we achieve it? (58:22 minutes). The gap between what we know and what we do persists in healthcare. On average, it takes 17 years to translate evidence from discovery into practice, which can lead to patients not receiving treatments of proven effectiveness, and healthcare professionals and policy makers not getting or using the information they need for optimized decision-making. Dr. Monika Kastner, lead for the Diabetes Action Canada Knowledge Translation program will discuss the importance of knowledge translation and implementation science and how they can be used to significantly shorten the period between discovery and application of knowledge to narrow the know-do gap.
